black and blue friday

this day is contrary in every way to what we refer to as the Christmas Spirit
You know the whole peace on earth, good will to human kind lyrics?
Where does punching to be first in line to buy more stuff we don’t need fit into this scheme?
And we spend again what we do not have.
We could stop the insanity and refuse their gimickery.
We could honestly wish each other well.
We could make an item with our hands for another.
Something that won’t break, make noise, or damage the environment.
Ahh, but I fear I live in another time.

Compare our hearts to this bit of shoppers forecasting
from 1849 when Edmund Sears (yes, the irony) wrote

It Came Upon a midnight clear
Peace on the earth, good will to men
From heaven’s all-gracious King” –
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats
O’er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o’er its Babel-sounds
The blessed angels sing.
But with the woes of strife
The world has suffered long;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love song which they bring; –
O hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing!
And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing; –
Oh, rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing!

  1. The magi wouldn’t recognize the concept of gift giving as it has evolved for some. Maybe we should just declare two holidays, Christmas as the name means; and Spending Day as a separate “special” day.
